Final Paper Grading Rubric


* This grading rubric is based on the assignment guidelines that I posted on the course blog over a month ago.
* Keep in mind that these are general guidelines for how I will grade your paper -- your specific paper will have met some or most of the criteria outlined in each section, but not necessarily all of them.

Grade: A
  • Your object of study is clear and specific, for example: a singular media text (a film, video game), a set of relevant media texts (news media coverage on the same topic), a media practice or a specific media trend. 
  • You develop a clear argument in your introduction as well as a theoretical framework in which to analyze your object of study. 
  • Your paper is organized in a logical and coherent manner, i.e. arranged around specific points, etc. 
  • You effectively apply concepts from course readings in your analysis. 
  • You effectively provide examples/evidence to support your claims and your arguments. 
  • You demonstrate a level of research that (a) shows your engagement with the topic and (b) is appropriate for a 200-level Communications course. 
  • Your writing is largely free of spelling and grammatical errors. 
  • Overall, your analysis is excellent and the paper shows a high degree of effort on your part. 

Grade: B
  • Your object of study is clear and specific. 
  • You develop a clear argument in your introduction but without the use of a clear theoretical framework for your analysis. 
  • Your overall organization could use a little bit of work. 
  • You make use of concepts from course readings, but they need to be better explained and/or situated within your analysis. 
  • You effectively provide examples/evidence to support your claims and your arguments. 
  • Your research on the subject is appropriate to the topic and adequate for a 200-level Communications course. 
  • Your writing contains a few spelling and/or grammatical problems. 
  • Overall, your analysis is solid and the paper shows a substantial amount of effort on your part. 

Grade: C
  • Your object of study is somewhat unfocused. 
  • Your argument is not clear and there is no substantial theoretical framework for your analysis. 
  • Your organization needs considerable work. 
  • You make reference to concepts and/or readings from the course but you do not explain them well or use them effectively. 
  • You provide limited examples/evidence to support your claims and your arguments. 
  • Your research on the subject is incomplete but nonetheless appropriate for a 200-level Communications course. 
  • Your paper needs to be better proofread and/or does not meet some of the basic requirements of the assignment, i.e. length. 
  • Overall, your analysis is mediocre and the paper shows only adequate effort on your part. 

Grade: F
  • Your object of study is unclear and/or irrelevant to our coursework. 
  • Your paper does not have a clear argument and/or lacks any theoretical framework. 
  • Your paper is disorganized and/or incoherent. 
  • You do not make a clear connection between your object of study and concepts (or readings) from the course. 
  • You provide inadequate examples/evidence to support your claims and your arguments. 
  • Your research on the subject is inappropriate to the topic and/or a 200-level Communications course. 
  • Your paper has numerous errors and/or does not meet basic requirements of the assignment. 
  • Overall, your analysis is poor and the paper shows minimal to no effort on your part.
